Camping Trips

SAGA's Camping Trips are open to non members and guests. It is a great way to meet some of our members and enjoy a weekend in the out of doors with other Gay Men.

We don’t have any products to show here right now.

SAGA’s Fall Campout to Shady Cove Campout September 17 - 20 is open for signups.

Signups for SAGA’s Fall Campout at the Shady Cove Group Campground are now open. As usual, this trip is a joint venture with LA and San Diego SAGA. This trip will again offer the option of two nights or three nights. The two night option is from Friday to Sunday, while the three night option is from Thursday to Sunday.

Now about the trip. Shady Cove Group campsite is located at 7,300 feet near Keller Peak, in the San Bernardino National Forest, not far from Running Springs. The campsite is actually located adjacent to the top of Snow Valley Ski Resort, which you pass on your way to Big Bear. One group usually hikes through the Ski Area to the top at Slide Peak, then to the location of the old fire lookout tower on Keller Peak. While the tower was destroyed in last fall's Line Fire, remnants remain, and it is unclear if it will be replaced. From this peak you get a view of much of Southern California,  all the way to Catalina Island on a clear day. There are many other hikes in the area, or you can visit the unique mountain towns of Big Bear or Lake Arrowhead.

As you may know, SAGA rents group campsites to provide privacy, and collects a fee to cover the costs of the campsite, equipment, food and beverages. These funds are then used to reimburse those who purchase supplies for the trip. The cost for the weekend is a low $115 for two nights, or $145 for three nights, which covers the campground rental and all food and beverages. One way we keep the cost low is by all pitching in and helping with the different tasks in planning and preparing meals and cleaning up after. SAGA campouts organize group meals, and each camper will be assigned to help with at least one meal, to help cook or do other tasks. If you are a cook and can plan a meal, please volunteer to cook or help cook. We will assign tasks to each person, as often as possible to one of your choices on the signup form.

You do not have to be a member of SAGA LA or SAGA San Diego but you must acknowledge the waiver when signing up to participate. Driving directions to the camp and a list of campers and their assignments will be e-mailed to all participants just prior to the trip.

Additional details of the trip are on a two page information flyer and signup form, attached to this email. To signup, fill out the signup form and send it with a check (payable to SAGA) to me, Ken Slater, 4305 California Ave, Long Beach CA 90807-2415.

We hope you can join us on our 96th campout since 1980! The deadline for signups is September 1. If you have any questions, let me know.
