Join SAGA Los Angeles for an in depth look at two under recognized Los Angeles landmarks, the Doheny Mansion and the One Institute. Our day begins at 10:00 am with a tour of the home of oil Baron Edward Doheny and viewing the spectacular Pompeian Room Tiffany glass dome. Doheny was famous for establishing the Los Angeles Oil fields and infamous for bribing Senators in the Teapot Dome Scandal. The movie ‘There Will Be Blood” is loosely based on Edward Doheny. So the next time you are speeding to Weho on Doheny Drive, you will know why there is a namesake.
Our day continues with a short walk to visit the One Institute. The One Institute is the largest repository of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer material in the world. Founded in 1952 as One Inc, the publisher of One Magazine which was born from the actions of the Mattachine Society based in Silverlake Los Angeles, the one institute resides in a former frat house and is now part of USC.
After the One Institute we will finish with an optional walk to have dinner at Chitchen Itza, regarded as one of the best Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles for over 10 years and known nationwide for Yucatan cuisine. More information and a menu is available at www.Chitchenitzarestaurant.com.
The event themes are old and gay! If this is not a perfect fit for SAGA…what is? The cost for the Doheny tour is $20 and we have limited tickets, so sign up through our website. The self guided tour of the One Institute is free and open to all.
